Question 1

How much does a Irish Sport Horse horse cost?

Accepted Answer

Prices vary widely with age, training and competition record. Save a search to see what comes to market in your budget.

Question 2

What paperwork should come with a Irish Sport Horse bought inside the EU?

Accepted Answer

Ask for the equine passport with the UELN, the microchip number matching that passport, and — for a cross-border move — a TRACES health certificate issued by an official vet. A seller who cannot produce the passport before viewing is a red flag.

Question 3

Should I get a vetting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Commission your own vet rather than using the seller's, agree the scope (five-stage plus radiographs is standard for a competition prospect), and get the report in writing before money moves.

Question 4

How do I move the horse home?

Accepted Answer

Use a licensed transporter with a type-2 authorisation for journeys over eight hours. Get the quote in writing with the collection window, and check the transporter's insurance covers the horse's value, not just the vehicle.

Question 5

Is VAT payable?

Accepted Answer

If the seller is a VAT-registered business, VAT may apply and the rate depends on both countries. Private-to-private sales are normally outside VAT. Get the invoice terms confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.
